Shaving cuts the hair at the surface, so it won’t be long before it begins to grow back. Hair coming from just below the surface emerges in just a few days, contributing to the impression that your underarms are darker than the surrounding skin. Shaving too aggressively or often could lead to skin hardening and darkening due to irritation.
Aside from shaving, there are other possible reasons the skin darkens under the arms:
Using Antiperspirants and Deodorants. Some individuals are prone to hyperpigmentation when exposed to the chemicals present in some underarm products. When used regularly, they can also cause dryness and clogged hair follicles.
Friction. Wearing tight clothes can aggravate hair follicles and cause chafing and discoloration.
Acanthosis Nigricans (AN). This skin pigmentation disorder can cause your skin to become darker and thicker. This is typically a symptom associated with obesity, diabetes, or fluctuating hormonal levels.
High on the Fitzpatrick Scale. People with darker skin tones are usually more prone to hyperpigmentation.
Waxing vs. Shaving
Once you start waxing, it’s time to ditch the razor! That’s because all of your hair follicles need to be on the same growth cycle, and shaving in between waxing appointments will throw off this schedule. The benefit is, the more regularly you wax, the longer lasting your results will be! Waxing is typically recommended every 3-4 weeks, but your esthetician will design an individual waxing schedule based on your specific needs and goals.
Fun Fact:
If you start waxing when you are around 13 years of age, and if you wax regularly without shaving, then when you are around 35 to 40 years old you may only need to wax just once every 4 to 5 months. Also, in certain areas like in your underarms, hair growth may reduce a lot more than in other areas.
Longer-lasting results. Waxing removes hair from the roots and this prevents the hair from growing back too quickly. Depending on your skin type, your hair will grow back in around 3 to 6 weeks. This is an efficient way of removing unwanted hair while leaving you to enjoy smooth, stubble-free skin for several weeks.
Softer and finer hair. When you get waxed regularly, you will notice that the hair that grows back is thinner and softer.
Exfoliation. Aside from completely removing hair from the roots, waxing also helps with exfoliating the skin. This means dead skin cells and debris are removed. Exfoliation aids in increasing circulation and rejuvenating the skin.
No skin damage. Have you ever nicked yourself trying to navigate a razor under your arms? Not only painful, these cuts can expose you to unwanted bacteria. With our waxing technique, we minimize discomfort, and all products used during the service are carefully selected to soothe and protect your skin.
Keeping the skin clean after a wax is very important! Please avoid deodorants or products that contain perfume on the treated area for at least 24 hours.
